Water Availability and Water Use
Project Chief: Susan Huston
Cooperator: Office of Water Recources in the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs
Period of Project: FY06-FY09
An important part of the USGS mission is to provide scientific information to manage our water resources and to enhance and protect our quality of life. Population growth and the accompanying increases in the demand for water in Alabama have raised public awareness regarding the availability of water resources. Resource managers need timely information regarding the amount of water used for a variety of categories in the State as well as long-term data that can be used to identify water-use trends. The USGS joined with the Office of Water Resources, Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs in 1996 to institute a program that continues today that provides for the collection of accurate water-use information for Alabama within a consistent national framework. USGS AND OWR-ADECA are in the process of completing one of the most comprehensive water-use assessments in the State. A forthcoming report will summarize the ground-water and surface-water withdrawals in Alabama for 2005 for the following categories: public supply, domestic-self-supplied, self-supplied industry, mining, thermoelectric power, agriculture (includes irrigation, aquaculture, and livestock), and irrigation by golf courses.
